Well I think the hot weather is here for at least four months, at least that is the way it felt today when I got away from the computer for about two hours.
I went to a local pond to check on the Blue Gill (Bream) to see if they were getting ready to spawn. This is a great time to look for MR. Bass Hog, because the bass will follow the bream to the shallows to get a easy meal.
I picked up some bugs and some small hooks and went to the pond to waste a hot mid-day and to work on my tan. It turned out to be a great outing if you want to call 18 Blue Gills minus two after the turtle ate two of them off my stringer. They were so big that I could not wrap my hand around them and maybe weight 3/4 to a pound a piece. They make a fine meal when you do not have the crappie to cook, the only thing is that it takes so many to make a meal. I guess that is a good thing at least you can enjoy watching the bobber go under and if using a ultra-light rod is still gives you a good fight.
I do not recommend trying to fillet those little buggers, you end up wasting a lot of good meat, I scale them and leave them whole.
If you are not going to cook them that night I recommend Freezing them in water in Freezer Bags. This will keep them from freezer burn, and when you do take them out it is like the day you caught them, nice and fresh.
Don’t forget the hush puppies and cole slaw, and watch it, you can hurt yourself eating to much.
As you may see there is always some kind of fish biting and me on the lake, pond, or mud hole trying my luck. Do not let a great day go by that you don’t look up in the sky and say thanks for a great day. Get out there even if it is not MR. BASS HOG you can still get out and enjoy the wonders of MOTHER NATURE.
Keep The Hooks Wet
Steve
