Fishing Report

May 2nd, 2009 · No Comments

I wish that I could say that I tore up the crappie at Pickwick the 20Th thru the 27Th, but if I did it would be a fish tail.

When I arrived at Iuka Mississippi (Bear Creek) on April the 20Th, I noticed that the water was up higher than I have ever seen it. If fact I would have to guess I was looking at maybe 10 feet up. I saw water in trees and brush that had never seen water before.

I checked with other fishing anglers and they said the old saying about should have been here before we got all the rain. The crappie were biting like crazy. I still gave it a shot for the crappie in hopes that I would score. I tried about every trick and only came up with two crappie all week.

The first day was not fruitful, so I went back to the cabin to regroup and try and figure out what was going on.

The next day I was on the water at daybreak and was going to give it another shot in Bear Creek. I changed location where I was the first day fishing like I always say “LOOK FOR ROCKS,  WOOD, GRASS”. I was looking at maybe getting some crappie at the rock wall. As it turned out I did catch two big fish at the rocks, but they were not crappie. They were a 5 pound Blue Channel Catfish, and a 3 pound Yellow Channel Catfish.

The third day is when I decided to switch tactics and go for bass. I made the right decision when I did  fishing took a new turn, meaning I started catching bass like all get out. Spinner-Bait and a Shaky-Head Worm seemed to be the trick.

I can not recall when I caught so many spotted bass at Pickwick as I did that week. I had to switch to mono line 8 pound test and it work the magic. I ended up with at least 100 bass for the week, and any angler would be proud of that. What I was doing was throwing the shaky-head worm behind the boat and slowly dragging it on the bottom. It did not take long to figure out the pattern and the game was on from there.

The best part of the whole trip was I was able to get out and enjoy the great outdoors. I must also add that I was looking for some fish for a friends son that was having a tournament on the 25th. As it turned out he placed 4th and would have been at the top if they had not dropped the water 5 feet the night before the tournament. All in all it still got the kid fishing and he out did his Father in the tournament.

Now I am so relaxed from the trip that you could pour me through a sifter, and looking forward to my next fishing trip.
