Bass Start to Shake

May 1, 2012

That’s right after the shoulder surgery and laying my Dad to rest Basshogfishing is about to hit the lakes hard and heavy,  and Mr. Basshog you better be ready for me.

I have been doing a little around the house in that small lake that I talk a lot about and the fish seem to be done with the spawn (Crappie) (Bass). Let us not forget the bream this is another great food source for Mr. BassHog, you can bet you will find a few real nice Bass close to a bream bed and feeding on the small bream. If not why in the world would they make so many lures that look like a bream/sunfish on the market?

Something else that I pointed out to a buddy of mine and I bet after I say this will get you to thinking also…..we threw the other day some topwater frogs and the Bass were knocking the frogs half way up the line. Not only did this work in the little lake but my buddy took some to New Johnsonville and they worked there also, But what I was about to say is if you are fishing early one morning or late evening and do not hear any bull frogs talking would not that give you the idea that the Bass are eating them up on a regular basis….try it and see if it does not work.

Hey here I am typing and should be loading the boat.

I have to start that off this way for Kevin Van Dam to take time out of his busy schedule to help me bring so much excitement to a little 13-year-old to receive a picture just for him with a message from KVD and Autograph. I wish now I would have had the camera handy so I could have snap a few pictures to send to KVD.

All I can do is say T H A N K  Y O U  KVD.

Now his Dad John Wants a autograph from Skeet Reese, Might have to wait for Christmas.

Well, we are back from another trip to Pickwick. The good news – I tied for 2nd in our tournament, the bad news – I caught 6 fish in 3 days of fishing. Our first day up there in October, Mr. Bob and I caught fish! We didn’t know where to go or what to throw being our first time there, but we caught fish. The first day neither one of us caught anything but the little white bass on crankbaits though. That evening several in our group told us we were wasting time up there with a crankbait, unless we were after stripers and white bass. This trip we never even tied a crankbait on. We went back to our spots where we had caught fish in October with no luck! We caught almost all our fish in October on topwater, could not get a bite this time on topwater. I threw my buzz baits a million times! Several colors. Well we were feeling pretty low Friday night before the tournament, having caught 2 fish apiece in 2 days. We all went to eat together (at Homer’s) and to Walmart to re-stock. Everyone else had been catching fish the first 2 days and they all headed to the crankbaits. Mr. Bob and I took note, went back to the cabin and tied on 3-4 each. Saturday morning, first thing went across Indian to one little point on the rock bar where the deep water came in close and we had caught fish last month. In 30 minutes I had 2 and he had 1, left there and went to Panther, fished the left side from the main river up to some dead trees just before it opened up. Mr. Bob picked up 2 in 5 minutes, then nothing. We left there headed to our HOT spots in Yellow! We fished about 10 different places up there we had caught fish previously and nothing! Not a bite! We spent about 4-5 hours of our fishing time up there. Finally gave up, ran back to Panther, started catching fish again. The wind was awful! The trolling motor coming out of the water on every wave! We took Mr. Bob’s 20’ boat this trip and thank goodness. The wind was high the whole time. We would start at the mouth, let the wind blow us up in Panther to the dead trees, motor back out and do it again. Everytime we would pick up 1-2 fish. About 1:30 the battery died and we could not make another pass. We both had 4 fish and could not pick up another drifting around upper Panther. We both had 4.84 lbs, tied for second. Mr. Bob got a 5lber almost to the boat and lost him. I know we could have had 5 fish if the battery would have lasted for 1 more pass. The guy that won it found some schooling fish in Panther on Fri., he caught 7 on an “Alabama Rig” schooling, had over 13 pounds. The wind changed direction and the weather was warmer and cloudier Sat, nobody caught fish. Several people came up empty! Thanks for the tip on Panther! Another friend told me if they weren’t schooling, throw a jerk bait. That’s what Mr. Bob caught all his fish on and I caught 2 on. Didn’t remember his advice until we started catching fish on it.

Thanks for the update and glad you used some of the advise I sent you, and great news that you tied for second. Maybe next year I will be able to find some other hot spots that will bring you first place.

Pick Wick Lake Update

October 19, 2011

Well the first three days we could not ask for any better weather than what we had. Mid 70″s and the nights were in the sixties who could ask for better weather and basshogfishing has become an expert on how to catch buffalo that weighed over ten pounds. A lot of you might think that I snagged the fish , but the two I caught were both hooked in the mouth.

The day after we arrived was able to catch 9 Small mouths that weight two to three pounds and fishing partner caught two-three and half pound large mouth, and his son nail a bass. Carson the small one is not one to get skunked and Tuesday he was the only one that caught anything and don’t think we did not hear about that all night long…call himself KVD JR.

When we got up Wed. morning was greeted by 48 degree weather and over cast not to mention the wind blowing 20 to 30 miles per hour and decided to strike out for a short time.

We saw real fast the fish were not hitting in the creek we were fishing so we went to the other side and slowly started out of the creek and lo and behold watching the graph at a crawl we saw fish in between rocks on the bottom and my buddy John heaved a white spinner bait and let if drop to the bottom and within three minutes he had boated at least three fish that hit the 3 pound mark. Needless to say before  the wind blew us off the lake he was able to land 9 large mouth bass. the water temp since we have been here at Pick Wick Lake has been low 64 high 72, and the water is clear.

It appears all my honey holes have dried up except the one I caught the small mouth…..but also appears we might have found another honey hole…we are about to go back out and see if it is an afternoon bit….and you can bet we will hit it again in the morning…I will get back and let you know….

It’s Cold but what a great way to spend the day outdoors and enjoying MOTHER NATURE and the fish.

Arrival at Pick Wick Lake

October 15, 2011

Arrived at the Lake  about 12:30 pm and straight into the cabin with no waiting. It took  a little bit of time to unload the boat and truck, but we were moving fast. We wanted to get ont he water for some fishing before it got late.

All we have heard is the fish are not going after nothing, do no know if it is because we are behind the full moon or the temps dropping.

Everyone that knows Basshogfishing knows it usually takes me about two days to find the fish and I do not give up looking until I am on them.

Today I did manage to stick what I first thought was a huge Large Mouth Bass or SmallMouth just to find out it was a buffalo  that weighed at least ten pounds on  Crank Bait that was my first on a crank bait.

We will see what Sunday Oct 16 brings and will still be hunting the Large Mouth or Smallie.
